The Church of San Michele is based on an octagonal floorplan with a central dome.

There are four major apses at the ends of the longer axes of the cross and four minor arches on the diagonal axes. These terminate with rounded apses.

In the words of Roberto Pane, from his book on Capri, its beauty lies in:

...the tasteful stucco work, the rhythmic alternation of arches and niches, the light curves of the unifying elements, the unimposing whiteness which sets off the colour to maximum effect...

The architectural plan is attributed to Antonio Domenico Vaccaro, who was also responsible for the Chiesa della Concezione at Montecalvario in Naples.
